Student Storage in Manipal: Where to Keep Your Stuff Over the Break
Last updated: October 2026 · Written by the Get My Bag team in Manipal. We run a storage service ourselves, and we’ve listed the free options first.
If you’re coming back to Manipal after the break, shipping everything home and back again can cost more than it’s worth. Storing it locally is often simpler. Here are your options, from free to paid, and how to store things so they come back in the same condition.
Your storage options in Manipal
| Option | Cost | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hostel luggage room | Free for residents | A couple of cartons or a suitcase | Limited space; not for valuables or electronics |
| A friend’s or senior’s flat | Free, or a favour | A few boxes | Their lease, their space, their landlord |
| Udupi station Digi Locker | Paid, short term | A bag for a day or two | Not for months of storage |
| Private storage in Manipal | Paid, by space and duration | Electronics, cycles, many boxes | Get an all-in quote with pickup and return |
1. The hostel luggage room
MAHE’s hostel FAQ confirms there’s a provision for leaving heavy luggage in the college luggage room. Ask your caretaker how much you can leave and for how long, because space is limited during the end-of-year rush.
It’s fine for clothes and books. It isn’t the place for a desktop PC, monitor, guitar or anything valuable, and the hostel rules already tell residents not to keep cash or valuables in their rooms. More in our guide to MAHE hostel move-out rules.
2. A friend’s flat
If a friend or senior is staying through the break, a few labelled boxes in a corner of their flat is the cheapest option there is. Agree on how long, keep it to what they can easily fit, and don’t leave anything you’d be upset about if their plans change.
3. The Digi Locker at Udupi station
Konkan Railway opened a self-operated Digi Locker at Udupi station in October 2025. It runs 24×7 with digital payment. It’s handy for a bag on travel day, but it isn’t designed for storing a room’s worth of things over a two-month break.
4. Private storage
The big national storage companies don’t appear to serve Manipal or Udupi at the time of writing, so private storage here means a local provider. When you compare, ask:
- Is the space secure, with CCTV and restricted access?
- Is it dry? Manipal’s monsoon starts in June, right in the middle of the summer break.
- Is pickup from your hostel included, and is delivery back included?
- Can you get something out mid-break if you need it?
- Is it priced per box or by space, and is there a minimum period?
Store or ship? A quick way to decide
- Store it if you’re coming back within a few months and it’s mostly bulky things you need here: bedding, a cycle, a desktop, kitchen things, books for next semester.
- Ship it if you’re graduating, changing cities for an internship, or the things are useful at home.
- Sell or give it away if it costs more to store or ship than to replace, like buckets, cheap mattresses and old extension boards.
How to pack things for storage
- Beat the monsoon damp: put silica gel packets in boxes, wrap electronics in plastic, and never pack damp clothes.
- Use proper cartons, not grocery boxes, and tape them on all seams.
- Label every box with your name, phone number and a short contents list.
- Photograph what’s inside each box before you seal it.
- Pack electronics in their original boxes if you still have them, or wrap them well with clothes.
- Wipe down the cycle and oil the chain if it’s going to sit for months.
