Sending Your Bike Home from Manipal: Train from Udupi vs Road

Last updated: October 2026 · Written by the Get My Bag team in Manipal. We transport bikes ourselves, so we’ve laid out the cheaper train route honestly too.

If you bought a scooter or bike in Manipal, getting it home is usually the trickiest part of moving out. There are two real options: send it by train from Udupi, or have a mover take it by road. Here’s how each works, what it costs and where people get caught out.

Train or road: the short version

Railway parcel from Udupi Road transport with a mover
Door to door? No. Station to station. Yes, usually
Freight cost Low: a few hundred rupees for many routes Roughly ₹2,500–12,000 depending on distance
Extra costs Packing at the station (₹300–1,000), porters, autos Usually included; check packing and GST
Your effort High: paperwork, fuel draining, two station trips Low: hand over the keys and documents
Typical time About 4–5 days as a parcel Depends on distance and route

Option 1: Sending your bike by train

Udupi station, about 5 km from Manipal, accepts parcels on the Konkan Railway. Under Indian Railways rules, you can book the bike as a parcel if you’re not travelling, or as luggage on your own train (arrive at least 30 minutes early with your ticket).

What you need

  • A photocopy of the RC and your government ID. Some stations also ask for a copy of the insurance.
  • If the bike isn’t in your name, carry the owner’s ID and documents too.
  • An empty fuel tank. The rules require it, and staff may check. If they find fuel, expect a fine.
  • A cardboard tag tied to the bike with the sending and destination stations.
  • A filled-in forwarding note with the make, registration number, weight and declared value.

What it costs

Railway freight for a bike is low because it’s charged by weight band and distance. On the official tables, a 100cc bike from Udupi to Mumbai works out to roughly ₹190–370 including GST. A 200cc bike costs about twice that. Add packing at the station, which porters usually do for ₹300–1,000, and auto fares at both ends.

Where people get caught out

  • Leftover fuel: drain it before you reach the station, and don’t ride in with the engine running.
  • Under-declaring the value: any compensation is based on what you declare.
  • Missing details: write the engine and chassis numbers on the form.
  • Late collection: stations can charge storage if the bike sits uncollected at the other end.

Option 2: Road transport with a mover

A mover picks the bike up from your hostel or flat, packs it and delivers it to your door. It costs more than train freight, but there’s no fuel draining, no station queue and no one needed at the other station.

Typical road transport prices in India (2026)

Distance Typical price range
Up to 300 km ₹2,500–4,000
300–700 km ₹3,500–6,000
700–1,200 km ₹5,000–8,000
1,200–2,000 km ₹6,500–10,000
Over 2,000 km ₹8,000–12,000 or more

Engine size matters as much as distance: a 350cc Royal Enfield costs more to move than a 110cc scooter.

Questions to ask any mover

  • Is packing included, and what’s used (bubble wrap, foam, a crate)?
  • Is the price inclusive of GST and doorstep delivery?
  • Is insurance available, and what does it cover?
  • Will you get photos at pickup and updates in transit?

Before you hand over your bike

  1. Photograph or video it from every side, including the odometer and any scratches.
  2. Remove helmets, phone mounts and anything loose. Empty the under-seat storage.
  3. Keep the original RC and insurance with you; hand over copies.
  4. Note the registration, engine and chassis numbers on your phone.

Shipping a bicycle instead?

Cycles can go by railway parcel or bus parcel. Students in Manipal have recommended the Durgamba parcel office on Udayavani Road. Either way, remove the pedals and turn the handlebar sideways, wrap the frame, and ask beforehand whether they’ll pack it or you need to bring it boxed.
