There are six realistic ways to get your things from Manipal to home. They range from very cheap but hands-on to door to door with no lifting. Here’s how each one works, what it costs, and the catch.
The quick comparison
| Method | How it works | Rough cost for 20 kg | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airline extra baggage | Travels with you | ₹15,000 (IndiGo, prebooked) | By far the most expensive |
| Bus parcel | Depot to depot | Per kg at the counter | Drop-off and pick-up at depots; limited tracking |
| Railway parcel | Udupi station to your station | Under ₹200 freight, plus packing and porters | Two station trips; packing rules |
| India Post parcel | Post office to door | About ₹1,270 within Karnataka; ₹1,735–2,200 to other states (incl. GST) | 35 kg maximum per parcel |
| Courier you book yourself | Pickup to door; you pack | About ₹750–1,050 by surface | Bulky boxes billed on size; packing is on you |
| Packers and movers | Packed at your room, delivered to your door | Per kg by destination | Compare the all-in price, not just the rate |
1. Airline extra baggage
IndiGo includes 15 kg of check-in baggage on most domestic fares. Extra baggage costs ₹750 per kg if you prebook (20 kg extra is ₹15,000) and ₹800 per kg at the airport. Air India Express offers a student fare with 10 kg of extra check-in baggage and a small discount, which is worth checking if you’re flying anyway.
Use it for: one extra bag at most. For anything more, ship it.
2. Bus parcel
Private bus operators carry parcels in the luggage hold on their routes. In Manipal, Durgamba’s luggage office is in Bajal Complex on Udayavani Road, and VRL has a parcel branch in Udupi. KSRTC changed how it runs cargo in late 2024, so ask at the Udupi bus stand for the current service.
Rates are per kg and aren’t published, so ask at the counter. It’s often cheap for heavy bags on direct routes.
The catch: you drop the parcel at a depot and someone collects it at the other end. Tracking is basic, and you bring your own packing.
3. Railway parcel from Udupi
Udupi station (on the Konkan Railway, about 5 km from Manipal) is open for parcel bookings. You fill in a forwarding note at the parcel office and pay freight by weight and distance. Loading happens within about a day on daily trains.
Freight itself is cheap. On the official rate tables, 20 kg costs roughly ₹15–50 to Bengaluru and ₹55–190 to Delhi, plus 5% GST, depending on the scale you choose. Konkan Railway charges on its own “chargeable distance”, so real bills can be a little higher.
The catch: it’s station to station. Budget ₹150–300 for packing at the station, plus porters, autos to and from both stations, and someone to collect at the other end.
4. India Post parcel
From 1 August 2026, India Post moved to a distance-based parcel tariff. For the first 5 kg it’s about ₹324 within Karnataka and up to ₹515 to other states. Each extra kg costs ₹50–90, and 18% GST is added. The maximum is 35 kg per parcel.
| Weight | Within Karnataka (e.g. Bengaluru) | Other states (e.g. Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata) |
|---|---|---|
| 10 kg | About ₹680 | About ₹910–1,140 |
| 20 kg | About ₹1,270 | About ₹1,735–2,200 |
| 30 kg | About ₹1,860 | About ₹2,560–3,260 |
These include GST. The range for other states depends on which zone your destination falls in, so confirm at the counter. Heavier loads have to be split into several parcels.
5. Booking a courier yourself
Major couriers take bookings from individuals online, with pickup from your door. In October 2026, one major courier’s calculator quoted about ₹750 for 20 kg by surface from Manipal to Bengaluru, and about ₹1,050 to Mumbai, Delhi or Kolkata. For 50 kg it was about ₹1,900–2,300. Express costs more.
The catch: those quotes assume actual weight. Most couriers bill the higher of actual weight and volumetric weight, which is worked out from box size. With the common 5,000 divisor, a 44 × 44 × 52 cm carton is billed as about 20 kg even if it only weighs 10 kg. Light, bulky things like pillows, bedding and clothes are where this bites. You also need strong cartons and good packing, because damage claims usually depend on it.
6. Packers and movers
A packing team comes to your hostel or flat with cartons and tape, packs everything, weighs it and ships it door to door. You don’t need to stay in Manipal for pickup if a friend can let them in.
What to compare: ask for an all-in price covering cartons, packing, pickup, transport, GST, insurance and delivery. Check whether they charge volumetric weight, whether there’s a minimum weight, and whether delivery is to your door or the ground floor.
At Get My Bag we charge by actual weight only (no volumetric charges, 20 kg minimum), include transit insurance when our team packs, and send live photos while we pack. See our luggage shipping service or check your price in the rate calculator.
Packing tips that save money and trouble
- Use 5-ply cartons, not old delivery boxes. Weak boxes are the most common reason for damage.
- Keep each box under about 20–25 kg. Put books in small boxes and bedding in big ones.
- Fill every gap with clothes or paper so nothing shifts.
- Tape in an H pattern on the top and bottom of every box.
- Label inside and outside with your name, phone number and full destination address.
- Photograph what goes in each box, and keep receipts and tracking numbers.
Frequently asked questions
What’s the cheapest way to send luggage home from Manipal?
For a few bags on a direct route, bus or railway parcel is usually cheapest in cash, if you can handle the depot or station trips. For a full room, door-to-door shipping saves the hidden costs of autos, porters and packing.
Can I send luggage without travelling with it?
Yes. Railway parcels, India Post, couriers and packers all ship unaccompanied. Some bus operators prefer that the sender travels on the same bus, so ask first.
How long will it take?
By surface from Manipal, expect about 3–4 days to Bengaluru, 5–6 days to Mumbai, 7–8 days to Delhi and 8–9 days to the North-East.
